What a civil engineering contractor is responsible for

On most Irish sites the civils contractor is the first trade on and the one that sets the tolerances everyone else inherits. Formation levels, drainage falls, foundation dimensions and duct positions are all set at this stage and are expensive to correct later.

That means the work is measured against the engineer's drawings and specification rather than against an approximate finish: levels are surveyed, compaction is achieved in layers, pipe falls are checked before backfill and as-built information is recorded as the works progress.

Where civil engineering work is needed

Housing schemes need estate roads, foul and storm networks, attenuation and plot foundations. Commercial and industrial sites need level platforms, heavy-duty slabs, yards and car parks capable of taking loaded vehicles. Agricultural developments need farm roads, hard standings, tanks and land drainage.

Public realm and infrastructure work adds kerbing, footpaths, drainage upgrades and utility ducting, usually with traffic management and local authority requirements attached.

How the works are sequenced

A typical sequence runs: clear and strip, excavate to formation, install deep drainage, import and compact granular fill, cast foundations, install shallow services and ducting, then build road and slab layers. Sequencing matters because every re-entry into completed ground costs time.

We agree the sequence at programme stage so follow-on trades are never waiting on an open dig, and so drainage and ducting are installed before surfaces are closed up.

What is the difference between a civil engineering contractor and a groundworks contractor?

The terms overlap heavily in Ireland. Groundworks usually refers to the substructure package on a building — strip, dig, fill, foundations and drainage. Civil engineering is the wider term and also covers roads, hard standings, attenuation, utilities and infrastructure outside the building footprint.

Do you work directly for developers or under a main contractor?

Both. We are engaged directly by developers, self-builders, farmers and businesses, and we also work as the civils subcontractor within a main contractor's site management structure.

What information do you need to price civil engineering works?

Site layout and levels drawings, drainage layout, foundation details and any site investigation report. Where drawings are not yet available, a site location and a description of the intended build is enough for an initial conversation.
