What is retaining walls?
A retaining wall holds back ground where a site changes level. When does a retaining wall need to be designed by an engineer?
Any wall retaining a meaningful depth of ground, carrying a surcharge such as a road, driveway or building above it, or forming part of a permanent structure should be designed by an engineer. The design sets the footing size, reinforcement, wall thickness and drainage detail.
Why does a retaining wall need drainage behind it?
Retained ground holds water, and water pressure adds significant load to the back of the wall. A granular drainage layer, weep holes or a land drain relieves that pressure so the wall only has to resist the soil, not the water as well.
What is the difference between a gabion wall and a concrete retaining wall?
A gabion wall is made of wire baskets filled with stone; it is free-draining, flexible and often used on road edges, embankments and rural sites. A reinforced concrete wall is cast on a footing, takes higher loads in a thinner profile and is used where space is tight or a finished face is needed.
Can you form the platform above and below the wall as well?
Yes. Retaining walls are normally part of a wider level-change package — excavation, temporary batters, the wall itself, granular backfill and the finished platforms both sides.
