What is foundations?
A foundation transfers the load of a building into ground that can carry it. The three common types in Ireland are strip foundations (a continuous trench under load-bearing walls), raft foundations (a single reinforced slab spreading load over soft ground) and pad foundations (isolated bases under columns). Rayco Civils sets out, excavates, reinforces and casts all three to the engineer's specification.

What is the difference between a strip, raft and pad foundation?
A strip foundation is a continuous concrete trench under load-bearing walls and suits firm ground. A raft is a single reinforced slab that spreads the building load over a wide area and is used where ground is soft or variable. A pad is an isolated base carrying a column or steel stanchion, common in commercial and agricultural frames.
Who decides the foundation design?
The design comes from the project engineer, based on the ground conditions and the loads from the building. We build to that design — we do not substitute a different foundation type on site.
Can you pour foundations in wet weather?
Foundations can be poured in most Irish weather, but excavations must be clean and free of standing water and soft material before concrete goes in. Where water is a problem we dewater and re-clean the formation rather than pour into it.
Do you install radon barriers and damp-proof courses?
Yes. Radon barriers and damp-proof membranes are installed as part of the foundation and floor slab works where the design calls for them.
