What is groundworks?
Groundworks is everything done below and around a building before the superstructure starts: clearing and stripping the site, excavating to formation level, importing and compacting stone fill, casting foundations, and laying foul, storm and utility services. What is included in a groundworks package?
A typical groundworks package covers site strip and vegetation clearance, bulk and reduced-level excavation, cart-away of spoil, stone fill and compaction, foundations, and foul, storm and utility drainage up to a build-ready platform. Scope is agreed against the drawings before work starts.
How long do groundworks take on a one-off house?
Duration depends on ground conditions, the size of the dig, the foundation type and the weather. Once we have seen the drawings and the site, we give a programme with start date and durations rather than an open-ended estimate.
Do groundworks need to be inspected?
Foundation excavations and reinforcement are normally inspected by the engineer before concrete is poured, and drainage is checked before backfill. We leave formations clean and hold the pour until the inspection has taken place.
Do you work for main contractors as well as private clients?
Yes. Rayco Civils works directly for private clients, developers and farmers, and as a civils subcontractor to main contractors on larger residential, commercial and industrial sites.
