What is the difference between bulk excavation and reduced-level excavation?
Bulk excavation is the general term for moving large volumes of material. Reduced-level excavation is the specific operation of digging a site down to a single design formation level before construction starts. Most site packages include both.
What is cut and fill?
Cut and fill means taking material from the high part of a site and using it to build up the low part, so the platform is formed with as little imported or exported material as possible. It reduces both muck-away costs and imported fill costs where the material is suitable.
Can excavated material be re-used on site?
Suitable inert subsoil and stone can often be re-used as engineered fill or in landscaping, subject to the engineer accepting the material. Topsoil, soft material and anything contaminated cannot be used as structural fill.
How is muck-away handled?
Surplus and unsuitable material is loaded and carted to licensed facilities, with the volumes and destinations recorded. Rock or contaminated material is normally priced separately because both change disposal and handling costs.
