Road construction builds a surface in layers: formation is prepared and proof rolled, a capping or sub-base is placed and compacted to the design thickness, kerbs and drainage are set to line and level, and binder and surface courses are laid on top. Each layer has a specified material and compaction requirement.

Roads fail from the bottom up. Nearly every rutted estate road or sinking yard is a formation or drainage problem, not a surfacing problem.

Layers and compaction
Sub-base is placed in layers thin enough to be compacted through, not tipped in one lift and rolled on top. Thickness is set by the design traffic loading, and soft spots in formation are dug out and replaced rather than bridged.
Levels are checked at each layer so that the finished surface has the correct falls and the surfacing thickness is not lost to a low sub-base.
Drainage and edges
Kerbs and channels hold the road together and direct water to gullies. Falls are set so water reaches a gully rather than ponding at a low point, and ironwork is set to finished level so it does not sit proud or sunken after surfacing.
Frequently asked questions
How thick should a road sub-base be?
Thickness is set by the design, based on the strength of the formation and the traffic the road will carry. An estate road carrying delivery and refuse vehicles needs a heavier build-up than a private driveway.
Do you carry out the final surfacing?
We build the formation, sub-base, kerbing, drainage and edge works and prepare the road for surfacing, and we coordinate with surfacing contractors for binder and wearing course where that is part of the package.
What causes an estate road to rut or sink?
Usually water in the sub-base, insufficient layer thickness, or compaction not achieved through the full depth. Repairs that only replace the surface do not fix any of the three.
