How to Choose a Civil Contractor in Ireland
Judge a civil contractor on four things: insurance and accreditation, the detail in their quotation, the plant and crews they actually control, and how they handle changes on site.
Non-negotiable checks
Ask for these before any pricing conversation:
- —Public Liability and Employer's Liability insurance certificates, in date
- —Safe Pass cards for all operatives and CSCS cards for plant operators
- —A RAMS pack specific to your works, not a generic template
- —Tax clearance and a registered company or business identity
- —References from projects of comparable type and scale
Read the quotation, not just the total
A detailed quotation tells you more than a price does. Look for measured quantities, stated assumptions about ground and disposal, a list of exclusions, and rates for the likely variations — rock, unsuitable material, dewatering, imported fill.
A one-line total with no breakdown is not cheaper; it just moves the conversation about cost to a point where you have less leverage.
Plant, crews and programme
Ask what plant the contractor owns and who is actually on your site. A contractor with their own machines and directly employed crews can hold a programme; one subletting every element cannot control it.
Ask for a simple programme showing the sequence and the key hold points where the engineer needs to inspect.
How they handle change
Every civils job changes — the ground decides that. What separates a good contractor is that changes are raised immediately, measured openly, agreed in writing and priced against pre-agreed rates. Surprises at final account stage are a process failure, not bad luck.
