The Road Construction Process Explained
A road is built from the bottom up: strip and excavate to formation, prove the subgrade, lay and compact sub-base, install drainage and kerbs, then surface with binder and wearing course.
The short answer
Road construction is a layered process. Each layer spreads load from the surface down into the ground, so the strength of the finished road depends far more on the formation and sub-base than on the black surface everyone sees.
On an Irish housing or commercial site the sequence is: setting out, excavation to formation, subgrade inspection, capping if required, sub-base, drainage and gullies, kerbing, base and binder course, then wearing course once the site traffic is finished.
Stage by stage
A typical estate or access road follows these stages:
- —Setting out road centreline, levels and gradients from the engineer's drawings
- —Excavation to formation level and removal of unsuitable material
- —Subgrade inspection and, where specified, capping layer to improve bearing
- —Sub-base laid and compacted in layers to the specified thickness
- —Road drainage — gullies, carrier drains and connections to the storm network
- —Kerbing set to line and level, haunched and backed with concrete
- —Footpath sub-base and edge restraint alongside the carriageway
- —Base and binder course, with the wearing course usually left until the end of the build
Why the wearing course is left until last
Heavy site traffic damages a finished surface. On phased housing sites the binder course is used as the working surface for the duration of the build and the wearing course goes on near completion, along with ironwork adjustment and final line marking.
This also matters for taking-in-charge: local authorities inspect the finished construction against the approved drawings, so records of layer thicknesses and compaction are kept as work proceeds.
Common problems and how they are avoided
Most road failures trace back to water or compaction. Water trapped in the formation softens the subgrade; poorly compacted sub-base settles under load and reflects as rutting or cracking through the surface.
The controls are simple and non-negotiable: keep the formation drained while working, compact in the specified layer thicknesses, and test rather than assume. Where conditions differ from the design assumptions, the engineer is told before the layer is covered.

Do you install kerbs and footpaths as well as the road?+
